Brothers of Italy and the League. Two different trajectories

This chapter compares Fratelli d’Italia and the League, the two relevant far-right parties within Italy’s asymmetric bipolarism. After outlining the transformation of the party system since the 2013 electoral earthquake, it reconstructs both as organisationally rooted newcomers, the League detached from the Lega Nord and Fratelli d’Italia from the MSI-AN tradition, whose ideological renovation produced sovereigntist, anti-immigration and socially conservative platforms. Drawing on Chapel Hill Expert Survey estimates, manifestos, plenary speeches and key roll-call votes of the ninth legislature, the analysis maps their cooperative rivalry. Convergence emerges on the Green Deal, the rule of law and the “new” rights; divergence on the Migration and Asylum Pact and, decisively, on Ukraine. Isolation is forecast for the League, convergence for Fratelli d’Italia.
